What the rules say about the money

The money is held on every one of 28 consecutive days, ending on the closing balance date of the most recent statement.

    ST 12.6; FIN 7.2
  • Dated within 31 days of the application

The evidence is dated no more than 31 days before the application date.

    FIN 7.1
  • Whose account

An account in the applicant's own name, or a parent's or legal guardian's with their written consent and proof of the relationship. Joint accounts count. Brothers' and sisters', friends' and business accounts don't.

    FIN 5.1–5.3
  • Other currencies

Money in another currency is converted to pounds at the OANDA rate on the date of application, one rate for every day.

    FIN 1.1
  • What isn't counted

Credit cards, overdrafts, shares, bonds, pensions and cryptocurrency. A fixed deposit counts only if the money can be reached immediately.

    FIN 3.1, FIN 8.1–8.2
  • Loans and sponsors

An official financial sponsor or a student loan from a regulated lender doesn't need the 28 days, and lowers the figure to show.

    ST 12.6; FIN 9.1–9.2
  • When no money is shown

Applying from inside the UK after 12 months there with permission means no funds to show. Nationals of the countries listed in ST 22.1 don't send the evidence with the application, but UKVI and universities may still ask for it.
