An invented applicant: two accounts, one a parent's in rupees, worked out by the check's own rules.

What it checks, paragraph by paragraph

Appendix Student and Appendix Finance, as published on GOV.UK, each figure kept with the date it applies from.

  • The published figure

Fees still to pay, living costs in or outside London for up to nine months, dependants, less an accommodation deposit paid. The version in force on the application date, including the 30 November 2026 rates.

    ST 12.3–12.5, ST 33.2
  • 28 days, every account added

Each day's end balance, from statements that add up to the balances they print, added across accounts. A day an account has no balance for is unknown, never zero.

    ST 12.6, FIN 7.2
  • Dated within 31 days

The latest statement's closing date against the application date, with the last day it still counts.

    FIN 7.1
  • In pounds, at one rate

Other currencies converted at the rate you enter from OANDA for the application date, one rate for every day. Credit cards are left out and named.

    FIN 1.1, FIN 8.2
  • Whose money it is

The applicant's, a partner's, or a parent's with the consent and proof of relationship listed. Anyone else's account is left out, and said so.

    FIN 5.1, FIN 5.3
  • Loans, sponsors, deposits, exemptions

A student loan or official sponsor lowers what the accounts must show. A fixed deposit counts from the day placed. ST 12.1 and the ST 22.1 list are noted.

    FIN 8.1, FIN 9.1–9.2, ST 12.1, ST 22.1

A finding for your team, facts for the applicant

Your team is exempt from the rules on immigration advice, so it sees the finding plainly. The applicant's report states what their statements show, and that only UKVI decides.

For your team

Each account's currency and whose it is, the rate used, and the documents the rules ask for alongside.

Common questions

What does the UK Student visa funds check do?
It's for a university's admissions or CAS team, on the Firm plan. During the pilot we switch it on for each university's account; ask us for one. Load an applicant's bank statements, open Visa check above the transactions, and enter the case: application date, where the course is, how many months, fees still to pay, dependants and any accommodation deposit paid. It works out the figure Appendix Student sets for that case, reads each day's end balance from every statement that adds up to the balances it prints, converts other currencies at the rate you enter, adds the accounts together day by day, and shows the 28 days ending on the latest statement's closing date against that figure, with the lowest day and any days below. It also checks the statement is dated within 31 days of the application. Your team sees the finding; the applicant gets a separate report of facts. Add each applicant to a batch and download it as a CSV for your own records.
Why does the applicant's report never say whether they pass?
Because telling someone whether their own documents meet a visa requirement is immigration advice, which in the UK only regulated advisers, and exempt bodies such as universities, may give. Your team is exempt, so the staff view states the finding plainly. The report for the applicant states facts they can check against the rules themselves: the published figure with its paragraph, the lowest combined balance, the days below the figure, the statement's date, what wasn't counted and why, and the documents the rules ask for alongside. It ends by saying only UKVI decides, and points them to your team or a regulated adviser. Its wording is tested so that a verdict, or an instruction such as what to do with their money, can't slip in.
Can the visa check count a parent's account, a fixed deposit, a loan or a sponsor?
Yes. Say whose each account is: the applicant's (alone or joint), a partner's, or a parent's or legal guardian's are counted (FIN 5.1); anyone else's, such as a brother's or a friend's, isn't, and is named as left out. For a parent's account the report lists what the rules ask for alongside: proof of the relationship and their written consent (FIN 5.3). A fixed deposit can be entered from its certificate, and counts from the day it was placed, only if the certificate shows the money can be reached immediately (FIN 8.1). A student loan or an official financial sponsor lowers what the accounts must show, and needs no 28 days (ST 12.6); a loan letter counts if it's dated no more than 6 months before the application (FIN 9.2).
Does the visa check keep applicants' details?
No. The statements are handled like any other: a PDF is destroyed once it's read, and a CSV or Excel file never leaves your browser. The case you type, the exchange rates and the batch live in that browser tab's memory only, so a reload empties them and nothing is sent to us; download the batch into your own records first. Your university's own policy (a margin above the figure, where the 28 days end, and what the 31 days are counted from) is remembered in your browser, not by us.
